Newsletter: Autumn 1st half term

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to Year Two!  After only one week back I am pleased to say that the children have settled into the school routine very well and that I am looking forward to seeing their progress this year.

Throughout English lessons this term children will be learning how to write: recounts, diary entries, and stories.  Within these lessons we will be looking at developing the children’s spelling, grammar and punctuation. The children will be sent home with a spelling booklet at the start of each half term with their weekly spellings in. We would greatly appreciate your support in encouraging your child to practise their spellings each week. Within lesson there will also be a big emphasis on developing children’s handwriting. At the end of this term any child who has shown a great improvement in their handwriting will receive a certificate. If you would like to support your child in reaching this goal then handwriting sheets can be sent home – please ask for some.

Within our Maths lessons the children will be furthering their knowledge of all four calculations. They will be applying their mathematical knowledge to answer a range of questions that will require them to problem solve; this will develop higher order thinking skills which will support the children when it comes to answering questions within progress tests.

This terms topic is The Great Fire of London. This year we are taking a new approach to teaching topic, one that allows the children to develop independence and that develops a passion for learning. Throughout this topic the children will be researching how the fire started and what happened once the fire was burning. Children will learn how to present this information in an array of different ways. In the art area the children will be looking at recreating pictures of the fire through learning how to shade and mix pains. In the DT area the children will have opportunity to build Pudding Lane through a range of different materials.

This year P.E will be on a Monday and a Friday. So that your child is able to fully participate please ensure that they have their P.E kit with them.  The children are very lucky this half term to have Ben, our P.E specialist, teach one of their sessions of P.E. Ben will be developing the children’s ball skills through a range of different games. I will be teaching dance this half term on Fridays. The children will be looking at creating a fire dance, linking to our topic.

I hope this gives you a flavour of the last half to the summer term.  If you have any questions, comments or require any additional support for your child, please feel free to speak to me in the playground or arrange an appointment by calling at the school office.

Kind regards,

Mrs Bennett and the Gnomes team
